Letter from Instructor

My name is Michaela Weilert and I would like to share some information with you about Li'l Hands. This new course is revolutionizing how parents and babies communicate. By utilizing American Sign Language, Li'l Hands assists parents and children in the development of communication skills by reducing frustrations that arise from a young child’s inability to convey their needs. Through the inclusion of both responsive and receptive communication a child gains a deeper understanding of language.

I created Li'l Hands to provide the opportunity for parents and relatives to relate with their baby like never before. Staring at six to seven months babies begin to establish fragmented memory, where they are able to retain information, making this age the most opportune time to initiate signing and to start breaking down the communication barrier between parent and child. However; starting before this time will not ‘hurt’ anything, as long as you understand it may take more time before seeing results.

A joint feeling of reduced frustrations are accomplished as a child no longer has to rely solely on crying or tantrums to get their point across. Words such as: nurse, more, finished, hungry, and dirty diaper are a few of the many that can be communicated by way of sign language. These tools allow the child to convey what's on their mind.

Inspired by the time I shared with a 9-month-old boy as his nanny and my 9 years experience of being an interpreter, Li'l Hands was created. This fascinating exploration into the minds of babies via sign language, gives families the building blocks they need to unlock the secrets of their child's thoughts. Through signing, basic wants and needs are expressed long before a child can verbalize with their undeveloped vocal cords.

What a wonderful opportunity to establish a relationship with your infant. Where other parents will be left to guess why their child is crying, your child will be able to tell you. Don't force your children to be trapped in a world where no one understands them. Join the growing number of parents who utilize Li'l Hands as a method to not only learn more about their babies, but also give them a head start over others in language acquisition. Through continued research and experiences, I not only offer baby sign language classes, but follow-up and Sing and Sign classes for parents to increase their signing skills. I look forward to hearing from you and am excited to get you and your li’l one bonding like never before!
